How To Bake The Perfect Christmas Cookies – 5 Classic Recipes Everyone Will Love

Baking Christmas cookies always brings out the festive spirit in me. The comforting aromas of butter, vanilla, and cinnamon permeate the kitchen, creating quite a delightful atmosphere. Before I know it, the house feels warmer and cozier. Just like it should be during the holiday season. If you’re anything like me, you probably bake Christmas cookies like a machine. Nevertheless, there is always room for a few classic recipes that will make everyone smile.

I am so excited to share five of my all-time favorite Christmas cookie recipes. These are the ones that everyone seems to love, from little ones excited about Santa to adults reminiscing about their childhood holidays. No matter if you’re a seasoned baker or getting your hands dirty for the first time, you’ll find the recipes are easy to follow and turn out beautifully each time.

Let’s get started on that fantastic winter wonderland!

Classic Sugar Cookies

You can’t talk about Christmas cookies without sugar cookies. They’re the quintessential holiday treat. They are simple, buttery, and perfect to decorate. What I love about sugar cookies is that they’re a blank canvas for creativity. You can stick to classic Christmas shapes like trees and stars or go wild with colors and sprinkles.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract, and mix well.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ones, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick and cut out your favorite shapes.
  6. Place the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  7. Once cooled, decorate with royal icing or sprinkles.

These Christmas cookies are ideal to make with your family – especially if you have little helpers who love fun shapes, icing, and sprinkles. They store beautifully and can last for up to two weeks in an airtight container – if you can resist them!

Gingerbread Men

Gingerbread men are a nostalgic favorite. They bring back memories of Christmas past with their warm, spicy flavors. The best part? To decorate these little guys is just as fun as to eat them. I like to use a simple mix of cinnamon, ginger, and cloves to create a fragrant, spicy dough. It is sturdy enough to hold its shape but still soft to bite into.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and spices in a bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla, mixing until combined.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Chill the dough for at least an hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick. Use a gingerbread man cutter to cut out shapes.
  6. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the edges are set.

Once baked and cooled, you can go all out with the decorations! I love royal icing for the finer details or little candies for buttons. Not only do these taste amazing, but they also double as adorable edible gifts.

Snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodles are an absolute must for me for the holidays. There’s something about the combination of soft, buttery cookies coated in cinnamon sugar that just screams Christmas. They’re simple but oh-so-satisfying.

Ingredients:

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp sugar (for rolling)
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon (for rolling)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla, mixing well.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until combined.
  5. Mix the 2 tbsp of sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl.
  6. Roll the dough into balls, then roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden.

These cookies are deliciously soft on the inside with a slight crisp on the outside. That makes them perfect to enjoy by the fireplace with a hot drink in your hand.

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla, mixing well.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until combined.
  4. Chill the dough for at least an hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Shortbread Cookies

There’s something so elegant about simple shortbread Christmas cookies. They’re rich, and buttery, and melt in your mouth. I always make a batch of these because they pair beautifully with a cup of tea or coffee. Also, they make up for an excellent gift when I wrap them up in a cute box.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour, powdered sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the vanilla and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Roll the dough into a log, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill for 30 minutes.
  5. Slice the dough into rounds and place on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until the edges are just golden.

Shortbread is such a classic holiday cookie. It fills the room with warm, cozy vibes.

Set the Scene with Scented Candles

While your Christmas cookies are baking to perfection, don’t forget to add an extra layer of holiday spirit by lighting a scented candle. It can enhance the entire experience. The blend of warm spices from the candle and the sweet smells from the oven will make your home feel like the coziest place on earth.

My recommendation is to check out the Pivotal Moments Berry Candle! It is an incredible scented candle that will make your home smell wonderful!

I hope these Christmas cookies will hit the sweet spot – no pun intended! Whether you’re serving them for a special occasion or a delicious daily treat, they’re bound to be a big hit for everybody.
