Timeless Delights: Crafting Soft Chewy Sugar Cookies

There’s an enchanting familiarity in the air when the scent of soft chewy sugar cookies wafts through my kitchen. It invokes treasured memories of my childhood, where alongside my mom, I eagerly dived into the delightful process of making these delectable treats—a tradition that seamlessly blends into the present with my own children.

Unfortunately, I lost my treasured recipe due to multiple life transitions and moves.  Recreating the recipe by memory failed me.  I stumbled upon a recipe that comes very close by @melskitchencafe.

The Sweet Nostalgia

Sugar cookies, for me, are not just about taste; they embody shared moments of culinary creativity. As a child, the highlight was adorning the cookies with a colorful cascade of sprinkles and an artistic drizzle of icing, transforming each one into an edible masterpiece.

Buttery Bliss

The quintessence of a perfect soft chewy sugar cookie lies in its divine buttery goodness, melting on the palate. The harmonious blend of sweetness, delicate crumb, and irresistible softness creates a symphony of flavors, offering comfort and joy in every bite.

Child-Friendly Dough

Now, as a mother, I’ve discovered that the allure of soft chewy sugar cookies extends beyond their taste. The dough, pliable and gentle, proves ideal for little hands. Eschewing the need for rolling or cutting, it becomes an engaging activity for young bakers, cutting down on prep time and fueling their excitement.

These soft, chewy and packed full of flavor sugar cookies are simple and easy to make.

  • Author: Jeannie Jacobs
  • Prep Time: 25
  • Cook Time: 10
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 24 1x
  • Method: Baking
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1cup (227 g) salted butter, softened to cool room temperature
  • 1 1/3cups (283 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2cups (355 g) all-purpose flour (see note!)
  • 1/2teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2teaspoon salt
  • Additional granulated sugar or sprinkles, for rolling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line two large, rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper and lightly grease with cooking spray.
  2. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large bowl with a handheld electric mixer, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until lightly and fluffy, 3-4 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla and mix again for 1-2 minutes until the batter lightens in color. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
  6. Scoop the cookie dough into rounded balls (about 2 tablespoons in size) or use an ice cream scooper; roll in granulated sugar or sprinkles and place on the prepared baking sheets a couple inches apart (about 12 cookies per baking sheet).
  7. Bake for 11-13 minutes until slightly crackly on top (but not much color around the edges or bottom to keep them soft and chewy).
  8. Let the cookies cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before removing to a cooling rack to cool completely.
