Refreshing Summer Melon Tea With A Twist

Two glasses of watermelon ice tea garnished with watermelon and mint leaves

Life is full of delightful surprises and today, I’m sharing one from my own kitchen. Despite my personal battle with watermelon-induced GI distress as a child, I’ve managed to craft the perfect, vibrant, and refreshing drink: ‘Refreshing Summer Melon Twist Tea’. Yes, you read it right – a self-proclaimed watermelon critic creating a watermelon tea! Life indeed is full of delicious ironies.

This refreshing concoction was inspired by my journey to the beautiful island of Bali, Indonesia, last summer. I found myself captivated by an array of vibrant, tropical flavors that not only quenched my thirst but also left a memorable imprint on my palate. Each sip of the local fruit drinks was a burst of sweet, tart, and refreshing delight that I sought to recreate in my own kitchen.

But let’s step back to where it all began. My complicated relationship with watermelons started in my grandfather’s garden. My brothers and I would sit at his feet as he carefully removed the seeds and fed us the juicy fruit. Each slice was a piece of joy, interrupted only by the inevitable aftermath.

My dear Grandma Mamie, ever the patient-nurse, would be left to tend to her sick grandchild every time. But her care, concern, and shared memories have left a lasting imprint on my heart.

So, with those memories fueling my creativity, and a little help from a taste tester, I’ve managed to craft a unique blend. Fresh watermelon juice, invigorating tea, zesty lime, and aromatic mint take center stage in this recipe. The surprise twist? A hint of vanilla and a sprinkle of pink Himalayan salt, round out the flavors, making it a drink that even the staunchest watermelon critic would fall in love with.

This is more than just a drink – it’s a nostalgic journey and a delicious voyage to the sunny beaches of Bali. It’s a sweet, tart, and refreshingly smooth ride that promises no tummy aches! So grab your glass, feel the sunshine, and join me as we make every day a day filled with Bali-inspired flavors! Here’s to Grandma Mamie, to cherished memories, and to create new ones with our taste buds. This ‘Bali Inspired Watermelon Tea’ is the perfect beverage for summer, tea time, or whenever you’re in need of a refreshing drink.

Watermelon Ice Tea With A Twist

Two glasses of watermelon ice tea garnished with watermelon and mint leaves

Refreshing melon summer drink that will cool you and quench your thrist.

  • Author: Jeannie Jacobs
  • Prep Time: 25
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 64 oz 1x
  • Category: Beverage

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups of fresh watermelon juice (preferably seedless)
  • 4 cups of brewed tea (black tea or green tea would work well, depending on your preference)
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • A handful of fresh mint leaves
  • Honey or agave nectar to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of pink Himalayan salt
  • Optional: Chia seeds for garnishing and adding a healthy twist.

Instructions

  1. Begin by brewing your tea. Allow it to steep to your desired strength, then remove the tea bags or strain out the loose tea leaves. Let it cool.
  2. In a blender, blend your fresh watermelon until it becomes juice. Strain it to remove any leftover pulp or seeds.
  3. In a large pitcher, combine your watermelon juice, cooled tea, lime juice, and fresh mint leaves.
  4. Add honey or agave nectar to sweeten to your liking. Stir well until it’s well combined.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract and pink Himalayan salt.
  6. Allow the mixture to chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour. This will help all the flavors to meld together.
  7. Before serving, give the tea a good stir, then pour into glasses filled with ice. Garnish each glass with an extra sprig of mint and a sprinkle of chia seeds, if desired.

Notes

Tips: Add as little or as much of the watermelon juice based on your personal preferences. I am not a huge watermelon fan, so I add about 2 cups of the watermelon juice. Add 1/2-1 cup of pineapple juice with lemon juice to taste. Also, add more mint and even substitute mint for Basil or use both.
