Here are some of my favorite ways to use that bubbly, tangy starter to create everything from sweet to savory treats. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or just starting your sourdough journey, these recipes are sure to inspire and delight.
Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls
Ingredients:
- 1 cup active sourdough starter
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 large egg
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup melted butter (for filling)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix the sourdough starter, milk, sugar, melted butter, salt, and egg.
- Gradually add the flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise overnight or until doubled in size.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Spread melted butter over the dough and sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar.
- Roll up the dough tightly and cut into 12 rolls. Place them in a greased baking dish.
- Cover and let rise for about 2 hours.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Optional: Drizzle with icing made from powdered sugar and milk.
Sourdough Waffles
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions:
- In a bowl, mix the sourdough starter, flour, and milk. Let it sit overnight.
- In the morning, add the egg, sugar, melted butter, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- Preheat your waffle iron and cook the batter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Sourdough Muffins
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup melted butter

- Add the sugar, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, baking soda, and salt. Mix until smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Sourdough Pretzels
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 4 cups flour
- 1 cup water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp baking soda
- Coarse salt for sprinkling
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix the sourdough starter, flour, water, sugar, and salt until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, then cover and let rise for 4-6 hours.
- Divide the dough into 8-10 pieces and roll each piece into a long rope. Shape into pretzels.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the baking soda.
- Boil the pretzels for 1 minute on each side, then place them on a baking sheet.

Sourdough Bagels
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter

- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix the sourdough starter, flour, water, sugar, and salt until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, then cover and let rise for 4-6 hours.

- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, then cover and let rise for 4-6 hours.
- Press the dough into a greased baking sheet and make dimples with your fingers.
- Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with fresh rosemary and sea salt.
- Let the dough rise for another hour.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
Sourdough Dutch Babies
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 1 cup milk
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 cup flour
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp butter
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a cast-iron skillet in the oven to preheat.
- In a blender, combine all ingredients except the butter and blend until smooth.
- Carefully remove the skillet from the oven and add the butter, swirling to coat.
- Pour the batter into the skillet and return to the oven.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
Sourdough Pancakes
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions:
- In a bowl, mix the sourdough starter, flour, and milk. Let it sit overnight.

Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a loaf pan.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
- In a separate bowl, mix the sourdough starter, pumpkin puree, sugar, oil, and eggs until smooth.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 50-60 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Sourdough Pie Crust
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup cold butter, cubed
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2-4 tbsp cold water
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the sourdough starter and mix until the dough starts to come together.
- Add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough forms a ball.
- Divide the dough in half, shape each half into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and use it to line your pie dish. Fill and bake according to your pie recipe.
Sourdough Lemon Pound Cake
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- Zest of 1 lemon
- Juice of 1 lemon
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a loaf pan.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Mix in the sourdough starter, milk, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and lemon juice until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 60-70 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Sourdough Biscotti
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup almonds or other nuts (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, mix the sourdough starter, flour, sugar, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, baking powder, and salt until a dough forms.
- Fold in almonds or other nuts, if using.
- Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a log about 12 inches long.
- Place the logs on the prepared baking sheet and flatten slightly.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until firm.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes, then slice each log into 1/2-inch thick slices.
- Place the slices cut-side down on the baking sheet and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until crisp.
